Hi owlhollow, I think maybe you're thinking of the Quilt as you go method? There are a few designers with books out about it-I used to have one by Marti Michell,it was a log cabin, and Betty Cotton has some books,do you get Kaye Woods show on PBS? There was a show about it on there too,but I think they are all machine pieced & quilted, but so what right ? the idea is the same. I made a Dresden Plate quilt this way, years ago. I left extra fabric & batting on each square then stitched them together & quilted the empty places after they were sewn together.I'm Sorry !not good at explaining, but but do look up Quilt as you go & you'll find lots!

There is a book called "Lap Quilting" by Gloria Bonesteel (I think that's her name). You can probably find it at the library, it's an old book. I've never done it that way tho. I just "lap" quilts my big quilts using a large hoop. It has always worked well, as long as you start in the middle, keep all layers tight in the hoop. Never had room for a large quilting frame so this was the alternative.
