Wagon Wheel Rag Rug
I went to Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento. I saw a volunteer making a sort of weaved rag rug on a round frame. There was a croud around her so I didn't get close enough to ask questions. I looked on line & found a little info. It got the name because pioneer women used the wheels off the wagon when they were settled as a frame. The info didn't say how to actually make the rug. I have made one of strips from old jeans & it looks pretty neat but the center isn't as flat as I would like it. ??Does anyone have any information for making one of these rugs??
I plan to make a rectangle frame to make some weaved rugs for our camper out of still more jeans that DH has outgrown.

For getting the centre to lie flat, you might want to either use strips that are slightly narrower than when you get closer to the circumference, or "skip under" two of the warp strands. ("Warp" is the foundation lines, right? "Weft" or "woof" would be the strands that get woven back and forth. I've never been able to remember with certainty which is which.)

It's roughly the same principle as for crocheting in the round: chain a stitch near the centre to reduce the bulk of the yarn, while increasing the number of stitches at the outside.

I have three seasons: GROW, *SEW*, and SEED CATALOG!

That sounds interesting.

here's something I found on it:

And here's some nice general info:

I saw once in a magazine braided terry cloth or rag rugs, they are easy, soft, and wash well. I just use my towels that are fraying at the edges and wearing thin in places, and they already match the bathroom or hall.

They can be made circular or rectangular, depending on the shape of the first inner piece of braid.

This is a site with many kinds of rag rugs with really interesting patterns to click on in the left frame:

I had checked the rafter sites but I hadn't found the others. I like the idea to use a chair roller pad as a cutting pad for my rotary cutter.
I haven't tried adding spokes farther out in the rug. I started all mine from the center. I'll have to work on that theme. I wish I could find clearer instructions with pictures. Better yet, I wish I could find a class.
I have made crocheted and braided things before but I think I like the weaving better if I can get all the details down.
I have made yarn wrapped baskets & coasters. That is fun too. I made a sewing basket with a lid like that for our camper trailer. It is really neat. I made it so I could have it in red to match the other accents.

That's neat, you sound more experienced at these sorts of things! I really liked the rugs at that rafter site. I had a hard time finding pictures, too. Maybe the library would have a couple books with pictures.

I am having a lot of fun with a multiple-colored striped shower curtain in my bathroom, and I'm buying towels in all the colors on sale, and rugs made out of them would be just great. it's hard to decide just what weave to use there were so many interesting ones! Smiler

Those round rugs were with braded or crochetted by my family members. I do braided rugs occas. My Favorite thing is to do piece work to make patchwork patterns.
I love the OG website!!
