Does anyone have a good online source for ordering herbs? My local stores have stopped carrying whole turmeric root. I prefer it for my pickle recipes. I'd appreciate any help in finding some!

I've used both of these and they are quick and reasonable:

www.sandmountainherbs.com/

What do you do with turmeric root?

Thank you so much Tarragon! I use whole turmeric for my Bread and Butter Pickles. I've tried recipes calling for powdered turmeric, but I just like the taste of the whole turmeric version.
I had just enough left for my fist round of Bread and Butter pickles. I'll have to order soon!

That's interesting that the flavor would be so different.

I was reading about getting the roots at a market and growing turmeric as a houseplant, it sounds like it's pretty easy.

Ooooohhhhh! Project idea! My DH will cringe if I bring home another!
Actually the taste isn't that different. It's the texture and with pickles that immensely important. With the whole root the texture is better, with the powder version seems slimier to my panel of tasters.

If you have an Indian grocery nearby you may be able to find whole turmeric. One near me has whole fresh and dried, as well as ground. Plus they have the most flavorful variety of coriander seed (another common pickling ingredient) - a yellowish, oval seed, much different in flavor, and more aromatic, than the common, round seed I have always used.
