I have basil plants planted in different locations in my yard and some of the leaves are getting tough and slightly bitter. Why have they lost there tenderness? Too wet? Too much sun? Help please!

Mine seem to get tough when I let them wilt before watering--especially the outer/upper parts that get more sun and wilt quicker. I think the best way to keep them tender is to cut them often.

Mine always do better when I treat them to richly amended dirt and lots of water, like lettuce. I've started mulching the plants and they don't start to wilt as quick.

Also, keep the blooms pinched off.
