Which ones do well? And what kind of sun do they need? would an east facing window be enough??

I'm already growing Rosemary & Italian Flat-Leaf Parsley in large deck pots outdoors; may seed a few others indoors if I have the space.
Unfortunately, an east-facing window is really pushing it light-wise for most herbs. You "might" get away with Chervil, but that's about it. Indoor herbs really need a full southern exposure &/or extra lighting. And even extra lighting isn't really optimum. It promotes growth, but the growth is usually weak & soft. |

I plan to do basil (lots and lots of basil!!), cilantro and chives at a bare minimum. I only have two windows in my kitchen and all the rest of the windows don't have sills large enough for plants. They do face south... but still don't get much direct light due to the monster oak in my front yard - course that won't be a problem much longer as the leaves are a'fallin'. Still, the basil I currently have (magic mtn variety) is doing well - though getting a bit spindly as I have let it start to flower too many times. I'm experimenting with rooting basil... seems to be working so far, but we'll see.
Anyway... those three herbs are what I use most... and my oregano, etc is usually around all year outside (under the eaves on the south side of the house), and I can do without it fresh if I must. If I could just get enough basil to use in every meal, I'd consider it a success. |

Maybe when the shrubberies lose all their leaves I can get some sun through the south windows....
I have corner windows in my bedroom that are east/west - I'm wanting to get potted trees in there - 1 fig, 1 olive, and 1 lime. Then take those out on the deck in summer. Maybe I can fit some herb plants around them? I'll be dreaming of food all night, lol! I've a craving for dill lately - anyone do this indoors? Basil - yes. I never think of it till I WANT it! Then it's like, pay 3-4 bucks for non organic handful or wait 2 months, lol! Parsley and cilantro are definitely on the list too, so it looks like those are a go for containers indoors? |

Just an update...
My basil-rooting experiment failed. I did pot up two small basil plants that were in a garden pot on the patio and brought them inside. My magic mtn basil was repotted (all in the same long window pot) and I put in a couple bunches of chives I found on clearance at the co-op. Everything is doing GREAT! YAY! I think I'm going to toss in some basil seed and see if I can get some fresh plants going. Wish me luck! |

So far I have some basil, Thai basil, and green perilla rooted, and I got some parsley, chives, and garlic chives started from seed. Plus the ones I always have in pots and bring in from outside (actually brought in last night - first freeze!) - bay leaf, curry leaf, and kaffir limes.
I know there will be more space...just have to figure out what else to plant there - sort of reverse of outside! lol Dave |
