Why DO golfers yell 'four'? Four what? Or is it 'For', like "For God's sake, go in the little hole you stupid little ball?" I made a hole in one once, but hubby said it didn't count because I took the ball and dropped it in the last hole 'cuz the Windmill kept shooting it back out at me. And really, what's the difference between a '4' iron and a '6' iron - 2! I mean really..........
McDirt seems to have left the building, he's out with his friends Beer, Porter and Ale. But legend has it that they used to yell "Foreplay" until the advent of television coverage, when it was shortened to "Fore" in order not to offend viewers.
Other historians claim it was Forearmed, Forewarned, Forewarned is Forearmed, or Fork It.
One of McDirt's ancient Scottish ancestors, the legendary Four-Armed McDirtosh, was one of the first Masters champions and is sometimes credited with the term. They'd see him coming onto the links and yell Four! Great to see ye!
