Ya, against my will. That stuff is a common weed and harder to get rid of than bindweed (morning glory). I can't imagine wanting to plant it on your property, maybe on the neighbors?

It's edible!! I've heard good tasting!!! Next year I'll plant more and maybe even sell it!!!

Not only that, but I hear that they keep for months if you leave them in their husks in a cool location in house/ root cellar etc.

Another Ground Cherry recipe called Poha Pie from This Organic Life by Joan Dye Gussow which she claims is adapted from Euell Gibbons, Stalking the Wild Asparagus:
Preheat oven to 450F Mix together: 3/4 C sugar 4 Tbs. flour 1 Tbs. grated lemon rind 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 6 Tbs. water 1 Tbs. lemon juice Boil until thickened. Add: 3 Cups ground cherries, husked and washed. Stir to mix. Fill an 8- to 9-inch pie crust, dot with butter, put on top crust and bake 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350F and bake for 40-50 minutes more, until golden brown. |

Just my luck! You nice folks provide some great sounding recipes to use up those ground cherries in the road ditch. This afternoon someone came along with a tractor and windrower and they are history! I may just have to plant some out back next year.

Wonderful to those these guys self-seed. I'm growing two plants this year (for the first time), and they are MARVELOUS and incredibly prolific. I also recently discovered they are called "Cape Gooseberries" in some places.
They make a really great salsa, too. food process with a hot pepper - the "sweet" of the ground cherries really makes for a tasty and interesting salsa! |

This is fascinating! I must try all this. OK, I'm tearing up the driveway and using it for more garden space!!

needmorespace - when I rented, and had only postage-stamp-sized yards to garden in, I annexed several neighbors' back yards/fallow flower beds. They weren't gardening, so I asked if I could use their space, and share the produce.
All said yes, and most were happy just to have someone tend it, so they didn't have to either weed, plant or mow! |
