Is a month and a half enough time for a watermelon to ripen. The first one I picked had all the signs of being ripe, but wasn't. So, Ive been very patient with next one.

A month and a half from when? My method to tell if a watermelon is ripe is to look for a yellow spot underneath where it was resting on the ground. Also I check that the tendril nearest the place where the melon hooks on to the vine is withered. Then, just for good measure, I thump the melon. I think it's supposed to sound hollow and I can never tell but I sure feel smug doing it!

A month and half from setting. as I said the tendrils were dried up on the last one I picked but it was not ripe even though when I thumped it, it sounded ripe. The underside is cream.

Unless you're growing these watermelons in a greenhouse or deep in the state of Florida, it is not the right time to harvest melons any more this year!

Well I'm in GA. The vine is very happy It has even set a fourth fruit. This is a vine that I dug up out of a friends yard!!! So are you saying I should pull up the vine and forget about the melons? And you didn't really answer my question. Smiler

This method works well for me with my crimson sweets...Thump the melon with your knuckles then thump your forehead, if they sound the same it is not ripe. Now thump your chest on the breastbone, if it sounds like that, then its ripe!

If life gives you lemons, keep 'em, 'cos hey-free lemons!

We are suppose to a light frost in GA and AL this weekend. I would let the melons continue to grow to see if they will survive. Before the frost comes, maybe cover them with clear plastic or a cold frame, then uncover them again as the day warms up.

Thanks!! I'm not close enough to the garden to get to it before the sun is high. If I had plastic I would do it. I'll keep you posted on what happens Smiler

I just picked my second melon today (zone 5, michigan). The vine was black from all the frosts but the last melon I picked was completely white/yellow inside, not at all ripe. So I decided to leave this one on as long as I could. Today I pulled up all the frozen vines and picked the melon! I haven't cut into it yet though...I'll let you know if it was WAY too late!
