Help! Just started all my seeds yesterday, and as I do every year, put 2 trays in my oven, covered with plastic to germinate. Typically I turn the oven light on for 5-10 minutes per day, just to warm it up a bit. This morning, tho, I forgot to turn the light off. Got home tonight to 2 trays of (slightly) steaming potting soil! Have I killed the seeds? I'm guessing so, but I'm hoping since it was so early in the process, maybe there's hope??? Please, please say it ain't so!
Steaming? Ok, were they steaming in the oven BEFORE you opened the door? If so then yeah, you've most likely killed the little buggers. If they steamed when you opened the door, and it was cold in your house, then maybe not....MAYBE. They may have acted like the human breath on a cold day. Not hot enough to cook anything, but when it comes in contact with cold air the water vapor becomes visiable. I honestly can't see how a litte 40-watt bulb could heat up the inside of your oven hot enough to cook anything. Go ahead and start two more trays as backup, but keep working the first trays as well, they may still be alive.
