i'v haerd about tomatoes, but have a few questions. how high off the ground do you suggest i hang a 5 gal bucket. i also read you can do peppers like that, sounds like fun for the kids . i plan to plant some shallow rooted flowers in the top. any ideas on anything else that would be fun to try upside down? the kids are excited about trying this as am i.
one more question what about wind do they have to be in a really sheltered area i was planning to hang them from the close line pole.
I hung my tomatoes from a heavy duty hook screwed into a beam on my front porch which is 8 feet tall. I used a kitty litter bucket with a handle and secured the handle with wire to the hook. Wind was indeed a factor as it caused one of the handles to break away from the bucket itself, something I didn't count on. Maybe duct tape would help? I've never tried to grow anything else this way but I've heard you can do strawberries. Don't be surprised when initially your tomatoes try to grow up instead of down. Eventually the weight of the plant will allow them to hang down. I had great luck planting this way. No diseases, no pests, easy to pick. Be careful of the hot summer sun if they are in a place where the sun will hit them directly, you may want to cover your containers with an insulating piece of cardboard which will help keep the roots cool. Have fun!
I have read several articles on this subject with great interest. This is a project I plan to do this year. I will also plant in ground as usual and compare the results. This will be a fun project that I will envolve the kids with rather than the usual.
