I read recently in Environmental Magazine that a significant percentage of produce in cities is actually grown in city gardens. Is this true? And if so, is anyone familiar with organic gardens in New York City or related organizations? Thanks!
Lauren, New York City has beautiful community gardens, vegetable & flower and also things like sculpural towers of vines and toys.
There are links to most of the official ones here: users.rcn.com/earthcel/gardens/gardens.html
But if you do a web search on New York/community gardens/guerrilla gardener you'll find a lot of information.
Most of the vegetables in the city come from commercialt truck farms, though (unless the big chain grocers have caused California to trump that). I heard on the radio the other day the New Jersey is actually one of the most successful savers of threatened farmland of all 50 states; and their market is primarily New York & the suburbs.
