Late March we're taking a three week train trip thru the US and Canada. I'm looking for recommendations of gardens to see in San Antonio, Boston, Providence and Newport Rhode Island, & Seattle. Thanks. Michelle
Try the Arnold Arboretum in Boston and Blithewold Gardens in Bristol Rhode Island, just outside of Newport: http://www.blithewold.org/ It's still pretty brisk around here that time of year, though, so dress warmly! Also check out Green Animals, a very cool topiary just on the outskirts of Newport..nifty clipped bushes in the shape of large animals.
Thanks. Sounds very interesting. I'm concerned about your weather comments--what is a Californian that lives in birkenstocks (with bare legs) to do? Fortuately I own a (singular) jacket! We'll have a car in Rhode Island so we should be able to see these things. Michelle
mb--best bring a coat and sweatshirts, clothes that can be layered because you never know when you will have to shed some or add some. Very unpredictable that time of year and the WIND--yowsa.
Sounds like fun--will you pass thru Iowa? Stop and pick me up!

No Iowa. Someday I hope. Isn't that where Seed Savers Exchange Is? I've always hoped to stop by and see what is really there. This trip is all long hauls on Amtrak and I know the pitfalls and hope we have enough time to sit back and relax and not get uptight if we are seven hours late (again). The leg in Canada will be on time. But, it is our country and a beautiful country and this is a way to see it without driving (myself crazy!) Seven states in 11 days and 3800 miles in December almost killed me. So--I hope someday to see your midwest--maybe next time. Michelle
