WELL, i was loading an anti virus and did not want to lose my connection, so I went here and saw this post on poke salad.I am 65 years old and have never read a book on natural foods, but I have learned a lot from old people. I have been eating poke for about 2o years, every spring I pick the young tender leaves, the first 6 or so, and I only boil them once and , over the years it has become a craving. Then, in about 2 weeks I pick about 6 inches of the stem, peel it and sautee it in butter or bacon grease, its as good as asperigus and earlier. In the summer, when the berries are deep red I eat three every 4 days for my arthritis. I am not disputing your statement that the books say it will kill you, but I was never much for what you read and preach as gospel, do you think the writer tried it to find out where here read it was fact? By the way ,I still work my land every day, by hand and I feel great. Owls D.H.

While I appreciate everyone's knowledge about this subject, please, no one reply to this thread any more. The verdict of the debate is thus: POKE SALAD IS EDIBLE, WHEN YOUNG AND COOKED RIGHT. SOMEONE ALMOST ATE IT WRONG. WE'RE ARGUING--WHILE AGREEING--ABOUT WEEDS! *Bangs gavel and orders case closed with a friendly wink*
