Heather - What about going to a recycled building supply company? Even in this backward town, we have one. The abs plumbing pipe material is very sturdy, and can be cut to size.
You could also make a "swingset" for your tomatoes and flowers out of PVC pipe and elbows. You can sand it first and paint it with stripes or a wild color, let the kids fingerpaint it. 10' PVC pipe is only a few dollars, and with a few elbows and connectors you can go wild!
