Anyone have any good sources for corn gluten meal via mail or otherwise? I'm interested in getting it in bulk as a preemergent and a fertilizer. Thanks for any help.

I used to get my corn gluten meal from Gardens Alive!
http://www.gardensalive.com. Got their WOW Plus!.(It has a tad more nitrogen for fert purposes). But the plain corn gluten can supply 10-12% nitrogen by itself.

This year, however, I found it available at local feed/farm supply for a lot less (plus I don't have to pay their S & H charges...which can be pretty steep).

Have you tried any local feed/farm supply stores in your area? More and more of them are carrying it now.

Ive avoided the GA CGM because of the price and the fancy name. I have found that their Earth worm castings are the highest quality castings Ive ever seen though. Thanks for the link.

Mike, as we're both up late....thought I'd throw this back at you.

You mentioned the GA earthworm castings. I was debating earlier this season about whose to get. As I've usually been satisfied with most of GA's products, I was considering getting theirs. Well, I waited too long and just added my compost. Could probably have used the extra boost of the castings though.

So, you'd really recommend them. How does one tell who has the best. What's the criteria?

I asked the same question last spring. Turns out I can buy it right down the road at the feed mill! If you live in a rural area, that is the first place I would try.

Do a search of these forums with the key work "corn gluten meal" and it should take you to my original thread from last May. I got lots of great responses for sources (including by-mail) of corn gluten meal.

And, if I may say so, the stuff works pretty well! My only mistake was not using quite enough and not quite early enough. I got some weeds, but fully intend to use the stuff again next year.

Try http://www.fertrell.com They have a glueten product that is as good as GA but for less. They may also have a GMO-free product if that is important to you (GA does not use certified organic corn to make their WOW products. They use the corn mash from the Seagram's plant next door to them). Fertrell caters to farmer's, not gardeners so they tend to be cheaper than GA.

Just a note about GA, some of the biologicals they sell (Bt) are genectically modified also.

Gardenz, Ive found that most of the castings ive bought come wet. GA's always comes perfectly dry. This way you get more volume per pound. It is also easier to mix. I'm not sure if its related to the castings but I have had better success with potted plants that I used the dry castings with as opposed to the wet ones.

Don't forget that CGM is also a big ingredient in dog and cat feeds (I know, I know, it's a little expensive for big garden needs).

My local feed store sells it in 50 pound bags for a reasonable price. Corn gluten meal is a byproduct of ethanol production. Do you have an ethanol plant nearby? There are also farmers who raise cattle - they feed it...you might ask around.

I get my CGM in 50 lb bags at the local feed store also. I spread it on the lawn in spring and fall with a drop spreader set really high so it goes on quite heavily. My dogs think I'm putting dinner all over the yard!
