we had big problems during harvest season with tomatoes and bananas and broccolli and and and just sitting on the counter with tons of little tiny flies. i don't know if they should be called gnats or fruit flies or what. putting the fruit and veggies in the fridge has helped in the kitchen, but they still are around the whole house in smaller numbers. sometimes when i water our houseplants swarms of them come streaming out from the dry-ish soil.
i've tried a fruit/wine in a glass with a funnel trap with little success. should i just go buy some fly paper, or is there something easier / better to do?
They are fungus gnats. They breed in wet soil. You can buy stuff to treat your houseplants with but all you really need to do is let your houseplants dry out in the top inch of soil. Really dry. Then layer a half inch of sand or tiny rocks like in an aquarium on top of the soil. (hey, tose little fish tank marble rocks dress up your houseplants too!) Gnats can't live there anymore. Bye bye fungus knats.
