For those particularly in Michigan and northwest Ohio be on the lookout for problems with Ash trees that could indicate you have the EAB. First signs are the tree canopy dieing out, because the larva eat the cambium layer of the tree and keep moisture and nutrients from reaching up there. If you have an Ash and see that type of problem notify your local Cooperative Extension Service office for verification and what to do. About the only thing currently recommended is cut the tree down, and all of those in a half mile radius, and chip it.
Michigan right now has a moratorium on movement of any Ash, even firewood, anywhere in the state. |

Oh we've already got them here in Columbus. They've taken out most of the ash trees at the Easton shopping center. Let's hope we can contain these little beasts before they develop a taste for something other than ash trees!

A problem is that after the Michigan Department of Agriculture inposed the moratorium on moving Ash trees from an 8 county area in southeast Michigan some landscapers did not observe that and shipped trees out to new shopping centers. A national chain put a new store in and contracted with a landscape company, after the moratorium, to landscape the place and Ash trees were brought in from se Michigan and now all Ash trees within 1 mile of that store are being cut down.
I've not heard they had gone as far south as Columbus, but if the landscapers exported Ash from se Michigan to that area they will be. |

They have already been confirmed by our ODNR. Our local paper has run countless stories of how to indentify the telltale signs of their presence. It's kinda sad.

I'm right around the corner from Easton--they are supposed to start cutting and burning all of the Ash trees. I work up on 161 and they are already cutting from the undeveloped and roadsided wooded areas. Its sad to see all of the cut up trees along the side of the road and a bunch of other trees with their scarlet letters (actually hot pink X's).
