am thinking that i want to save space, does anyone grow onion in a square foot gardening plan, i want my onions to get bigger the better, was thinking spaceing every 12 inches but could i go closer, i sure am liking the ideas of eliminating extra tilling and mulching for weed controll along with possable preen, to me my garden is my canvas and i am the artist and i love a clean weed free garden
Never enough time to do things right but theres allways time to do it over... If it aint broke dont fix it !!! We dont plan to fail, instead, we fail to plan. You can either wait in the sittin room, or sit in the waitin room. There is no blood in my viens, its, its, its, its chlorophyl. My thumb aint allways green !!!!!!!!!!!!!. My thumb, my thumb, its turning green.

Since the huge onions in the stores are only about 6 inches across, I would shoot for that spacing myself. I start off planting them a lot closer (as close as 2-3 inches) and harvest the cullings as green onions. Then I harvest the next cullings as "boiler" onions (they make better in soups and stews than the bigger onions). That usually leaves about 6 inch spacing for the "big boys".

Jim, I space them at about 6 or 8 per sq foot. For larger onions go 6 per foot. My onions are about 4" around right now and looking to be a killer crop.
