i am starting lavender from seed. everything is going great execpt the lavender. i put plenty of seed in the flat twice and only 3 have come up. any ideas on what they like? kawalabear zone 7
They like bottom heat, bright light, and not too wet conditions, very poor, well drained soil, and a live soil with lots of biological activity in it. Sprinkle sand on top, or very fine gravel...lavender is usually easier to root than to grow from seed, though.
Hi kawalabear, Lavender is slow to germinate, it can take up to three months. Also, the seed has a poor viability rate. Allow plenty of air circulation. I germinate lavender outside in late winter so it can get a few mild freezes.
hello Kawalabear ,you have heard from the expert as far as i am concerned. CalmPeace and Brennewoman is pretty smart also. I tried and succeded this year with Lavender. I tried 10 kinds of lavender to sprout from seed. and I 've had a 80% success rate with my lavender seeds. I barely covered them with spagham moss and bottomed watered them also. Now my heat was not there I kept a 65 deg. temp sprouting them and misted the spaqgham moss every day. and light on the soil 16 hours a day. and now i let the soil dry slightly between watering early in the AM. and they are 1 1/2 " tall! This week 4 weeks afdter the first ones sprouted i had another one sprouted. I will say this much The old seed from last year and the year before last only 1 seed sprouted out of 50. But Fresh seed did wonderfully! Great luck 'bear
