I have a couple of volunteer vegetable plants from previous years..I think they are from a "greens" mix. They are blooming and I was wondering if the flowers are edible?

If you're absolutely sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that all the flowering plants are from a "greens mix", then the flowers are edible - although more than likely extremely bitter. However, if there's ANY uncertainty as to a positive identification, it's best to pass them by. Not all vegetable flowers are edible, not to mention the flowers of toxic weeds.

I suppose legumes, brassicas, alliums and cucurbits are edible and probably greens like lettuce, chard. I don't think solinaceae would be.

No longer a market virgin; looking forward to year two of being a professional grower.

Solinaceae (the nightshades) are certainly not edible. All parts of the leaves and stems and blossoms are toxic. This group includes peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, huckleberries, and eggplant.

The foliage of the legume group is hard to digest and some people are alergic to legumes. I don't know about the flowers of legumes.

Little Minnie has it pegged about right.

I don't know about the foliage, but the lovely flowers of Scarlet Runner Bean are not only very striking, but delicious (very "beany") as well. They make terrific edible salad garnishes.

I just said that because a lot of people eat pea shoots.
and the deer like legumes so much!

Here is a site which lists the edible plants and flowers.

Every year I plant a row of Nasturtiums. I eat the leaves AND the flowers. The leaves are slightly peppery and taste great on your sandwich of tomatoes, peppers and nasturtium leaves. BTW-I'm a heart patient, so instead of mayonnaise (which is really curdled vegetable fat) I use an olive tapenade or of antipasto.
