About 5 years ago one of the guys who worked with my husband gave him some tomato seeds he'd gotten from a client who got them from a relative in Italy. It's a great low moisture tomato, good for salsa and making sauce cause it's not so juicy. It has kind of an odd shape, similar to a roma but with a wiggle in it and comes to a point at the end. We never knew what kind it was until DH saw a picture along with the description this year in a Pinetree Seed catalog. Opalka. Good to know what we've been growing all this time.

Trudy, go to that site and check out the Jersey Devil and the San Marzano Redorta...
I don't mean to confuse you, but I'm growing odd shaped tomatoes from hand-me-down unidentified seeds as well, and your description sort of matches my tomatoes, except I'd also say that they are really flavorful Big Grin , but what are they?

Now I'm getting anxious to see what my tomatoes are going to look like! Big Grin I got the Opalka's from Pinetree this year because they sounded perfect for making ketchup and sauces. Now I can't wait to see them.

Yeah. Opalkas are good for putting on a sandwich to take to work. Sliced longways- not much juice to make it soggy or run down yer arm when you eat it! Wink

Until last summer I wasn't a big tomato eater. When I hear people talking about the nuisances of flavor amoung the varieties, I don't get it. I'll often pick them out of salads cause I don't like the texture. But last year I ate some of the Opalkas, (maybe, I need to go to that site) diced real small, with olive oil and fresh basil and WOW! I really like tomatoes.
