Tha's what one person told me. Is it true?

No, it's not. Whatever idiot said that to you is simply someone not very interested in the vast wonderful world of salad greens.

Leaf lettuces are fabulous & contain such variation in color & flavor. Mixed in with other greens & head-type lettuces & you have a salad adventure that even the priciest restaurant couldn't approach.

Never let anyone tell you exactly what you should be growing. They don't know you or your tastes & are just stamping down your own discoveries & dining creativity.

As the ancient ones used to say "It takes all kinds of lettuce to make a salad". (I never heard anyone actually say this, but it sounds like it would make a good prov-herb.) Wink

It's true for the person who told you that.

Some people enjoy haggis, too.

What shapes peoples opinions is interesting. My father and his siblings (all 8 of 'em) refused to eat Brussel Sprouts. Nothing against the taste, but it was the one item all the kids truly detested to work of harvesting back on the family farm. Apparantly they formed a pact one particularly unpleasurable afternoon that none of them would ever eat them.

Yeah, that was a reply you got from someone to a thread about lettuce that you started on the Gardenweb forum.

He's wrong.

Is that your opinion also?

I agree with all of the above posters allenwrench. Why limit your choices in lettuce to only a couple? That's crazy, considering that there are so many great ones out there to choose from. My advice, keep an open mind, experiment and grow what pleases you. No one else's opinion matters when it comes to personal taste.

Muddy knees David! Compost is my friend. Every day I enroll in gardening school. Some days it feels like kindergarten!
