It looks like some animal has tried to dig holes in my lawn, but wasn't very good at it. (I guess I should be thankful for that!) The grass has been dug into, but the animal stopped once it got to the soil level. I have a run of these holes about 2" in diameter every 3-4'in a meandering line across my lawn. Any guess on what it could be?

Towards the bottom has a pic of skunk damage from them grubbing for worms and grubs.

Fox skunk or possum will shred lawn for worms and grubs. Its pretty superficial.

Yup, that's what made the holes in my lawn too. So does that mean they're just looking, or does it confirm that I have grubs? I don't have any brown or bad patches of lawn, especially where they were digging.

This late in the year, it may just be a young adult who has recently left Mom and spread out into new territory, looking for a good hunting ground. If the damage keeps occurring regularly, then I'd say you have grubs.
