I'm in the middle of remodeling a flowers database such that users can locate information on one or more flowers or seed suppliers based on criteria like height, color, zone, bloom duration, etc..
It got me to wondering if I vegetable gardeners might find something similar of value. The criteria could include days to maturity, yield/distance (you input the spacing), zones, etc. In thinking this through I realize I need to use criteria that would only apply to specific vegetables (slicers & beefsteak (as in tomatoes), fingerlings & baking (as in potatoes), juice & raw (as in carrots), dry & fresh (as in beans) for examples).
So before I got into mapping such a tool out I wanted to know if it would be something you would use. What do you think?
Evil succeeds when good people do nothing. No trees were killed or animals harmed in the sending of this message; however a great many electrons were horribly inconvenienced.

Thanks Mark, I'm aware of the level of effort required to populate it. The initial launch will only have a fraction of the crops available but it should be a significant number to make it useful. I consider it a labor of love. )
I've also wondered about the possibility of allowing seed companies and others to add cultivars at will - subject to review/edits. But I wouldn't count on this as a method for populating the database.
Despite the limited responses in favor of this I've decided to go ahead with the project. We're working out the flowers first and then we'll do the vegetables. I'll let you know when it goes live if you're interested.
That depends. I should be able to have prelim version (300-400 varieties) online in the next few months. If I had some volunteers adding cultivars and seed supplier info, we could have 5,000-10,000 varieties by next season. If anyone is interested in helping move this project along, drop me a note!
Update: I've contacted several seed companies about this project and while many are enthusiastic about participating - I hit them at a bad time. Duh. But I'm happy to say that a few are working with me to develop the prototype. Not sure what final form the tool will take.
