I know, after all these years of gardening I should know this, but what should I plant after the peas are done? I have ended up with an empty space. I am zone 4. Thanks for your help.

Most years, I can do cucumbers on the same trellis I used for the peas. I use a heavy duty chicken wire about 5 feet tall with rerod stakes every 3 feet.

Most years, peas are done about mid-June and at that time soil is warm enough for cucumbers. Things are late this year, so I may have to start those cukes inside or else plant them in amongst the peas before the peas are harvested. That might gain me a couple weeks.

The peas leave the soil well conditioned for the heavy growth of the cucumbers.

I planted glads and onions with mine, so when the vines are done I'll have flowers. Hate that empty space so early in the season! :_|

Yup, you could plant cukes, or more peas, or zuchinni, or carrots, or almost anything that takes a bit to get started until you actualy pull the pea plants up. Some things can even be planted at the same time, like radishes and carrot seeds so why not carrot and pea seeds?

I know darn well I posted on this thread a couple days ago and it never showed up!!!! :O What the heck's going on? That's happened before.

Anyway, as for the peas, I planted glads with mine this year, so when the peas are gone I'll have flowers in their place. So far both are doing well. Smiler

I have vegetable beds about 4 feet wide.
For over 20years, I have planted peas on a fence on the inside of the bed (may1) then, June 1, pole beans are planted on the edges of the bed. When the peas are done, the beans are just starting to climb.
Last year, I made a bamboo trellis that went edge to edge over the 4' pea fence and used string to make a web to connect the poles.
Sounds confusing, hope you get the idea...it is sort of early in the morning,LOL
