Yikes!! :O

My dogs would eat anything and the worse it smells, the better. I keep my compost in plastic bins and so far they have not been able to get anything substantial out of there. And, of course, I don't put any meat or other fatty food scraps in there.

Now the rest of the yard is a different story. They will eat grass, leaves, twigs, pine cones, shrubs, flowers, and anything else they can get in their mouths. Although they live in the house, they love to go outside and play. So I've started putting their dog food dish out there with them so at least some of what they eat will be good for them!

Not much a dog won't eat! Even their own puke! My compost pile is in the fenced-in garden so he can't get to it, but he does sniff it out when I let him in with me. Now that winter is coming, the snowdrifts will be over the fence and he will be able to get over the fence and bring me home some pies---cow pies that is, all frozen and ready for the freezer. I haven't had trouble with the dog getting into the compost pile but she loves pecans. My neighbor likes to pick up the nuts and eat them while visiting and always gives Lucy some nutmeats, now she cracks her own and eats the meat only.

Hey Owl, I had a dog that would do that with peanuts. she'd shell them out faster than us kids could!

My dog is loving the finished compost, even though I never put animal products (except eggshells) into the pile. What's up, do you think?

Maybe it's not quite as finished as you thought! My dogs love the compost pile--the slimier the better. But when it's finished, they could care less.

My dog had a case of teary eyes a few years ago. I figure he got into the compost when it was cooking and burned his eyes. There was no lasting damage but now I am way more careful with him and the compost bins.

Who knows why your dog eats compost. Dogs are goofy, that's part of their appeal. There's even a term for when your dog gets really sick from eating something unknown...nonspecific gastroenteritis. Our dog has eaten just about everything (including poisonous mushrooms where we learned the new term above)-and loves eggs by the way. She thinks the leftover egg in the eggshell is a big treat. Are you washing them out before tossing them in the bucket to go out?
