The pepper-speck town of Nederland CO, just down the road from us, already has three dispensaries for medicinal marijuana, and local demand for the glory weed is extremely high. So bride and I are thinking of trying out a new cash crop I haven't grown since college.

Oddly enough, there not much info on the Internet. (We'll do it organically, of course.)

That's interesting--I'm wondering if you'll need license (USDA or some other alphabet agency) and how much control/oversight will be involved. Since it's a "controlled substance" I expect most information will have to come from a governmental source (total guess but I worked in the criminal justice system for a long time). I'd check it out at length before jumping in, but it could be a good legal "sideline".

i have "third person hearsay" on this. A friend of mine is a "house sitter" for a person in Northern Calif. who grows the medicinal stuff. He was making conversation with me about it (the friend was, I dont know his "employer") saying stuff like; 'he has to cut a hole exactly 3' x 3' and three feet deep, and once in a while, he get's a flyby by the Sheriff's dept, and once some horsback riders where on the "back road over yonder", yet could SEE the stuff, soon the "road was CLOSED" ' and various things like that. So I'm sure there are lots of regulations involved, not-to-mention the 'threat' of getting ripped off. My brother grew some for personal use in the 70's in a back yard greenhouse (milky plastic cover), and 2 years in a row... one day, just when the buds popped out, he arrived home only to see it was whacked off at the trunks!

This is a plant I've never grown. I would love the opportunity to grow it sometime, just so I could observe it (yeah, right, everyone is probably saying), but I would have to be certain that it was legal to do so, and that I wouldn't end up in jail or lose my house or ruin my husband's chances for U.S. citizenship (he's got a green card, but he's not eligible for citizenship yet).

I have only seen pictures of full-grown plants, because all the friends I knew who did grow a little for personal use "back in the day" either got scared or paranoid the cops were coming, or more likely, they couldn't wait and harvested it early. Razzer

It is interesting to watch the state's rights versus Federal law thing play out on this issue.

You should always have a plant B.

I would like to offer my own story here, but don't want the self-appointed PC police to banish me from the site like they did to Teotzlcoatl. Just mention the plant by name and they will accuse you of promoting illicit drug use.

Sounds like you think you should be able to violate the terms of service you agreed to. "self-appointed PC police" - who are you referring to? The only person I know with the power to ban is not self-appointed, he's the paid moderator by the owners of the website. Perhaps you should try the other ploy and start screaming (incorrectly) "censorship"! Don't you just hate when you can't be in charge?

Not really. But I'm not fond of being falsely accused of intentions that I don't have (like wanting to violate terms or screaming censorship).

Yeah, well, getting back to marijuana, it is entirely legal to grow and use for medical reasons in many states, and the feds have now said they'll bow to state law. In CO I can grow it openly so long as I have a valid list of dispensaries or direct-to-user clients with medical marijuana cards from an MD who consume what I grow.

It's far superior to drugs or alcohol in fighting serious pain (as in cancer) and numerous other physical and mental maladies (such as PTSD panic attacks). Mind you, using it in conjunction with the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" album heightens the effect. clap

Good for you Flatiron. Of course, in Los Angeles the number of MJ dispensaries now far outnumbers Starbucks locations, and it's a pretty sure thing that not all of those who grow it, sell it, prescribe it or use it are 100% legit.

I'm glad some people find it useful for medical treatment and that it's being made available to them – not so sure about it being better than all medications at easing pain (and I don't know of any doctors who promote alcohol for pain management), but I know it can help a person regain appetite, which is no small thing for people suffering from cancer, AIDS and other serious conditions.

Just be careful! You don't want to end up in jail.

I tried weed during chemo and it did absolutely nothing for me. Big disappointment.

Not an accusation. Conceivable I could have been checking out the gal in front of me during that grammar class. If that's the case I'll be glad to reword my post! Certainly sounds like denigrating the moderator though. If it doesn't violate the terms of service then post your story.

Someone gave me a few seeds back in the late 70's and I gave it a go Big Grin. Had it in a pot (no pun intened) on my window. It did really well but I chickened out and got rid of it. I would love to give it another go,but I don't know what the laws are here in Canada regarding growing it. I wonder if Elfie know's.

I don't know about pot first hand, but since I have been growing herbs hydrobonically the last two winters, I realized immediately why they grow pot this way! Vegetative growth that I can't stop, no matter how much I pick! One plant is all I need of varieties I used to need 4 or 5 of to give me enough.

And it is amazing how much organic hydro stuff they have now.
