I saw Big Smile Sunflowers in Johnny's seed catalog. They only grow to a height of 10-15" in a 4-6" container. They sound adorable. I just wondered if anyone has ever grown this type. I thought about growing several in a larger pot. This is my question: Wouldn't they grow, bloom once and for a short period, then you're just left with a leafy stalk in a pot?
Also, if you would just grow 1 plant in a 4-6" pot, could you keep it inside, and would it stay in bloom for any length of time?
I've grown many varieties of sunflowers for years. They do not grow well in groups. Grow them individually. They bloom once, unless you grow the multistalked varieties. Sunflowers require full sun. If you moved it inside, I don't know what would happen. The bloom will last until the seeds are pollinated by the bees. It will then fade, droop and dry up. The head will lean down to protect the seeds from the rain. They make great bird feeders in the winter. You can leave them or cut the head and hang them later for the birds.
