Don't cover the green tops. Just let them continue growing. They're supposed to bloom in late summer and on through cooler fall weather. But they're not hardy in our zone, ellenr. They're a tropical bulb and only survive outdoors in zones 10 or higher. But you can dig them up in the fall just like you'd dig up any other non-hardy bulb and store them overwinter. OR...you can container plant them and bring the container indoors if you have a warm, sunny place to keep it. For anyone wondering what this really is it is "Mirabilis jalapa" aka Marvel of Peru, and many other less common names.
The sign of a good gardener is not a green thumb, it is brown knees.
