Not esoteric at all, in fact very common in garden centers. I'm not sure about places like Lowe's and Home Depot.
All you have to do is check the bag. If it says potting soil, you don't want it. It'll be heavy and will hold too much moisture for your cuttings. It should say potting MIX on the bag and should feel pretty light and fluffy. The ingredients will be things like peat moss, vermiculite, maybe finely shredded bark, compost, things like that. No actual soil. Sometimes they are called container mixes. Good luck! |

Soiless potting mix is mainly either perlite or peat moss products.
However, a homemade soiless mix can be made from leaf mold or compost. |

You can make your own easily.
Take 3 parts peat moss 2 part good compost 1 part perlite .25 parts sand mix together and you have a soiless mix or you can buy a potting mix. Though home made soiless mixes are usually far superior to store bought |
