'Cherokee Purple' hands down for variety.

For plant, 'Cherokee Purple' grafted onto hardy tomato root stock.

I never liked tomatoes all my life. Several years ago I did the research and started a similar thread in a very popular forum with hundreds of members who frequented the forum. In a majority of people's lists, Cherokee Purple ranked the top 10 and top 3 more times than not. So I decided I'd try that one. It was amazing. I've tried many other varieties of heirloom tomatoes since, Cherokee Purple still holds #1 ranking for me.

Nat ,
What zone do you live in?

I live in Zone 7 and am going to try Cherokee Purple next year. This year I tried a heirloom Brandywine but I guess our 90 degree summer days along with high humidity kept them from doing anything.

Dylan, I'm in zone 7 too (about 300 miles directly East of you) and raised Cherokee Purple this year with pretty fair results. My tomatoes got more shade than I expected, and the CP's did better than several other varieties. My Brandywine did ok too, so it may be the intensity of the afternoon sun that messed things up. I'm going to deliberately plant some in full sun and others where the hottest part of the day the sun won't be directly on them and see what happens.

Nat--GREAT UTube video--is this a co-op or other volunteer program?

Dylanfreake,

Zone 6A. Tomato plants won't flower at 96F degrees or above. They also tend to go dormant under heat stress. You may consider a location that provides afternoon shade. Or consider grafting the heirloom onto hardy grafting stock. I did it for the first time this year. They're amazing.

WileyR,

Thanks! If you look at the description in the upper right area of the screen where the video is, it'll tell you everything. If you have further questions after checking it out, let me know.
