One thing to remember, most containers will dry out faster than your regular garden space so water the containers more often. But make sure the containers also have good drainage because very few veggies like their feet wet all the time.

I filled my container with the compost I made. Planted cucumbers in it and put a concrete reinforcing wire cage around the whole pot for the cucumbers to grow up on. Worked much better than when I planted them in the garden.

If it got too hot, I moved them into the shade.

I did Eggplant, Rosa Bianca, in 5 gallon buckets last year with great results.. especially when you consider we had a severe drought last year. I have done cukes, and some tomatoes in containers. The cukes did very well. I have also planted tabasco peppers and other peppers in pots and they have done great, despite the less than 5 gallon sized pots I used. Hanging my head.. I used 1-2 gallon pots and the peppers still produced lavishly! But I did use composted soil in those pots!

The book, "The bountiful Container" was a big help to me when I first started out. Unfortunately, it is in storage along with everything else I own, so I can't give you names of the two ladies who wrote it.

Thanks I have found several reviews of the book, still searching for the book itself. I'm guessing its outta print. I'll check used book sites and ebay. The authors are: Rose Marie Nichols McGee and Maggie Stuckey. Thanks for the suggestion.

My local Barnes & Noble has a copy on the shelf. Since mine is in storage, I find myself going by there to reference things in the book. Minimum depth, etc.
