hi all i also use the soda bottle for my potted plants, i do it a little diff. though i poke the hole in the bottom of the bottle burry it in the mid. of the pot. then i can just unscrew the lid and use a funnel to fill it back up then put the lid back . that way you dont have to desturb you plants when they get big by removing the bottle.  as locke said it works great!!!

Like others said, I don't think I'd use it for food plants. If you've got a real need in container ornamentals they may help. They can get messy if not contained, my MIL used them in a container that a critter then dug up, we still find them all around that pot.
Heather.head, WRT TSS, it's caused by tampons that work too well, not what their made of. Even the organic cotton ones can cause it under the right conditions, says so on the box. Not intending to be critical, just don't want it assumed that organic=safe in this case.
