I have been trying for 2 years to come up with a better fence for my garden. Initially all I wanted was something to keep the kids from running and riding their bikes through it. We used tree trimmings to construct a rustic looking, quaint 2 rail fence that I loved the look of but it didn't keep the cat from using the garden as her litter box. Every option I looked at was super expensive, too big, still let the cat get in or blocked too much light. Until this weekend!!!

You know, you just have to think outside the box sometimes, so I started looking for anything that even slightly resembled fencing material. I finally settled on the white, plastic coated wire shelves you buy for your closet. The peices I bought were 20" inches wide and 5 feet long, perfect! The wire is close together so the cat can't get through, she's so fat I don't think she can jump it, but that remains to be seen. I used 1/4" PVC pipe cut to 30 inches and hammered it into the ground 10 inches and attached the shelves with zip ties. I used 17 plus part of one more peices of shelving, about 10 pieces of PVC cut in half and the whole thing cost about $250!! And I put it up in 4 hours all by myself! Another good thing about it is you can bend it (with alittle care and muscle) so it curved around my kidney shaped garden beautifully. I love it and I had to share. I will take a picture when things green up around here and post it somewhere so you guys can see it, yeah, I'm alittle proud....

In this area, it seems wire shelving is about all they install in new homes anymore. Try finding scrap shelving from construction sites. Alot of this stuff gets tossed out. I had some from the scrap heap myself.

Sounds like that worked grat for you!! Bravo! Well I don't know about fence but I use birdnetting. It's easy to put up, inexpensive, available in many sizes, easy to cut to size and keeps out squirrels and other unwanted pests, including the local cats. I don't fasten mine so once in a great while I catch a mockingbird. That's always interesting. the bees and other helpful pollinators can still get in to do their job.
