As for your eggplant, you don't say where you live, zone?
When my eggplant are small, I put a mini-greenhouse over them, which is simply a milk jug with the bottom cut off and about a 3-4" circle cut out of the top. Works great. When they start growing out the top, I remove the jug.
Loamy was right about the moisture, critters get thirsty. You could also strategically place things they like, ears of corn, nuts, in a place away from your garden. Keep them interested in other things.
Easiest solution: Big Freakin' Dog.
