Does anybody know of a drought resistant lawn i can grow in Oakland Ca.We have a dog now so I have to give up the garden in the front yard.Can I amend the soil to retain water.
You need to talk with the people at your local office of the University of California USDA Cooeprative Extension Service about which grass(es) you should be growing and then build up the soil so it will grow that turf in a good, healthy condition. There are many different growing conditions in California and, as I recall, a couple at least around Oakland.
The sign of a good gardener is not a green thumb, it is brown knees.

Dichondra needs more water than even a regular lawn. Many people in California are taking out their lawns. We simply don't have the rain to make an English climate-type plant happy, and so have to irrigate and fertilize massively. And I know many folks here with dogs, big and little dogs, who don't have any grass at all.
Gramma and Granpa had dichondra in there lawn in the upper dessert of the High Sierra. Granpa would sprinkle it every day. Almost pure sand underneath. It looked good. For the Oakland hills, my first idea was Mountain Mix grass seed. It will stay green most of the year.
