Hi All, got a new patch of garden but it's under the tree's shadow half the day. Is there any hope of growing any type of vege there? Thanks ahead of time. Smiler

Chives do well under trees among the roots and so do strawberries. The roots are generally more of an issue than the shade.

What exosure does your plot have? My back yard gets east and south sun up until 2-3pm, then it is in the shade. I grow Tomatoes, peppers, cukes, eggplants, chard, lettuce and lots of herbs with this southern exposure. In other words.. it gets so hot here in north eastern KY that the shade actually helps the veggies listed above because the shade reduces the temps so the plants will bloom in 90+ days.
But you are in Michigan.

I guess a lot depends on what you mean by "half of the day" In full summer.. shade coming over around 2pm is 1/2 the day here.

I thought it was under the tree, but if the roots aren't a problem, just the shade, then you can grow all kinds of stuff. Peas don't mind afternoon shade, spinach, lettuce, even cucumbers can tolerate some shade. I have one bed that gets shade from the house and I have grown carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, chard, brocolli, peas, spinach, in that bed with no problem. The cucumbers were very productive, in fact.

I have grown tomatoes on the west side of the house right next to the foundation. They didn't get any sun until after noon, but they did just fine.

Plant a little seed...........
