My onions have maggots. They are little white maggots that are in the stems of my onions and they are causing most of my onions to die. Does anyone have a solution to these pests? Thank you in advance.

Dirtdigger,
Before your question disappeared to the next page...I wanted to offer a few suggestions re the onion maggots. As an fyi: maggots thrive in cool, wet environment. Have you been having those conditions where you are? -Wood Ashes (Dusted around the base of the plant and reapplied after rain. -Diotomaceous Earth (Same as above) -Red Pepper (Same as above or as a spray) As preventative for next season: -Parasitic nematodes. -Row Covers -Crop Rotation Hope some of these suggestions aren't too late. gardenz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices. To be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and the frightened, thoughtless search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own: for the children, and the children yet unborn." Thanks, Gardenz
Yes we have had some very wet and cool weather the last few weeks. I did dust around the onions with Diatamaeous earth and that seem to help. However, it rained yesterday and I see that I need to dust again after each rain. I lost about half of my onions and had to set out more. Thanks for answering my post now I know what to do to prevent it next season. Dirtdigger |
