Can you use ashes from the duraflame type logs in compost or is it just too full of chemicals?

Deb,
From their own website,http://www.duraflame.com/index.cfm, comes the info that "They're man-made logs of recycled wood and sawdust that is coated in a paraffin wax..." (to make them ignite quicker and last longer than "real" wood logs). Based on that alone, I, personally, wouldn't use the ash either in the compost or in the garden directly. This was a rather interesting thread on a composting forum regarding Duraflame. One poster simply stated that just reading the ingredients on the Duraflame label (under "Warning") was enough to convince her not to use the ash in her garden. http://www.mastercomposter.com/archive/arc_ing2.html#DURA gardenz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices. To be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and the frightened, thoughtless search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own: for the children, and the children yet unborn."
