I recently heard about using carnivorous houseplants (venus flytrap, pitcher plant, etc.) as a possible means to control the fruit flies that seem to hover around my kitchen, especially near the commpost container and bowls of produce from my local orchard. Has anybody tried this?

I have several carnivorous plant terrariums in my classrooms. My students put pieces of fruit left over from lunch in the enclosures, in order to attract fruit flies, to feed the plants. What a brilliant idea you have. I bet Pitcher Plants would gobble up the pantry moths, too. Which ever plants you choose to grow, make sure that you provide the proper humidity. If you choose bog plants, be sure to use bottled or filtered water (chlorine is a killer). Good luck! Please keep us (my students too) informed. This would be a wonderful science fair project.

Wow, what a great idea. My boys have been begging me to get a venus flytrap, I think we may just go and get one now. Thanks for the idea!
