Does any one here grow them? (hazel nut, or filbert trees). I've been wanting to plant some type of nut and these are the right size of plant, and I like eating them. I live in Georgia, zone 7 with acidic clay soil.
I planted some 2 years ago, but really can't help with your question. I neglected the poor things and they shriveled up and died, or maybe they weren't impressed with the very alkali soil we have here.

I just planted two NY hazelnut trees. there all over this area zone 5-6. love the nuts and i use them to make milk. go for it. I bought mine from grimos nursery in Canada. www.grimonut.com hope this helps
I planted hazelnuts about 8 years ago, but, they were more of the bush variety. They are about 5 feet tall, but they do tend to spread wider if not controlled. The nuts are tasty, but, one has to cover then with a mesh screen to keep the squirils from getting them before you do. I made a screen cloce with wood frame that is light and just sets over the bush. The screen was light so as not to hinder the sun. Once harvest time comes, just lift the screen and your nuts should be all around the plant on the ground. Good Luck.
If you join the Arbor Day Foundation, they are looking for volunteers to grow filberts, hazelnuts that they have developed. The price was amazingly cheap and they wanted you to keep records of the plants progress.
I live in utah in zone 6 and I have 4. I'm not sure what kind they are but they ar bushes instead of trees. I got starts from my ex neighbor. I remember eating them with her kids when we were growing up. We also have clay soil but, it's pretty neutral. I just put them in last year. I haven't gotten any nuts yet but they look good.
