Hi, have any of you ever tried to grow tomatoes in 5 gallon pails hung with the tomato planted in a hole cut in the bottom of the pail? what kind of soil do you use, and how did it turn out? My Dad wants to try it, but I can't find any info on it. Did come across a plastic bag looking thing that cost $19.95, but he can't afford it. I thought you fellow gardeners might have the answers.
thanks, Peachylynn.

This is actually a well talked about subject on OG. Try running a search (scroll down to the bottom of this page and find the tiny word "Search". Click on it, and type in 'upside down tomatoes' for your subject.) I think you'll find lots of posts.

I have my buckets all ready, and a very sturdy stand that won't topple over.I expect to have about 6 buckets going.I'm really looking forward to trying this.I hope you find all the info you need ,let us know how it works out for your Dad.I wanted to hang some more buckets from the deck but I'm getting resistance from DH who likes everything neat.I really don't know what he seen in me then, I've NEVER been neat.

Some years ago I did mine a bit different . B-)

I planted them right side up in hanging baskets and let them hang from the roof overhang. When they got big they just drooped over the side of the baskets and instead of the vines climbing up a cage they just hung down. It worked great but they did tend to dry quicker so I had to water twice a day in the warmer weather.

The plants did very well and produced a very nice crop. In addition we had no pests get into them that year. Wink
