I'll take any advice out there for re-potting my boston fern before I take it outdoors next month. The last two died shortly after I put them in slightly larger pots. I know this one is rootbound, I can tell when I try to push my finger down in the dirt. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi golden,
Boston ferns are very easy to devide and repot. Key to success is to place divisions in a pot not much bigger than the root ball, water it in immediately, and keep it in indirect light for a week or two. Daily misting of foliage will serve them well. Peace |

My deck space is limited and my boston ferns pretty large already, so I do what I call a root pruning. When I take the ferns out of the pot the root ball is tight and compacted. I use a sharp knife and cut about an inch off the entire way around the root ball. Then I massage the roots to loosen up what remains, re-pot in the same container and keep it moist. I also clean up the plant itself at this time. Thin out any brown or raggedy stuff. They're in bright but indirect light on a porch with trees around the edge of the porch.
