I have started my seedlings in my basement this year as opossed to a small green house. the seedlings for the most part has come up. (a little early) but any way no way that I can stop things now. I have suffecient light and I am keeping the air moving with two fans. the day time temp is 70 degrees and higher and the night time I try to get it down to 60 degrees. My question is two part I think but not sure that I am watering them two much. I water every night just before I turn out the lights, they are planted in a variety of starting trays but 90% are in peat pot type pots, I use a sprayer to water with and use about two and one half gallons a night I have three tables eight feet long and 30 inches wide packed full of seedlings. Now I think that I might be over watering because one I am getting a greenish film over a lot of the packs, two the color seems to be a shade lighter than I like to see. I have already given them a shot of fish and seaweed mix. The plants are just about three weeks old since germinating. the lettuce leaves a actually redish. I have not seen this reaction before. Are there any suggestions. thanks Mel
Water in the Am not the pm let the plants dry before bed. The darkness like the mold ness. When you water your outside garden this summer water in am. the pm watering encourges disease and problems!
re: overwatering. Well, given the numbers you provided you are giving your seedlings 0.07 inches of water per square inch of table space. That doesn't sound like much to me - less than a tenth of an inch. Is that too much? I'd say it depends upon the size of the plugs/peat pots.
I also think that you should switch to watering in the morning for the reasons mentioned.
I keep my plants in trays and bottom water (put water in the trays, not on the leaves)The trays dry between waterings and I usually only water twice a week. The plants go under lights in the basement and I've never had a problem growing healthy plants.

Sounds like things look and feel different now that you aren't out in a greenhouse anymore. That would explain the lighter color of the plants. It is just the opposite for me since I am using a greenhouse for the first time and am shocked at the deep, dark green colors I have that I never saw under lights in the house. I know things dry out VERY quickly in a greenhouse as well. This is something I am learning very quickly, and I'm sure you are adjusting to the opposite inside. When I grew inside I got the green mossy stuff on the surface of the starting mix and it never harmed anything.
Maybe try letting things dry out a bit more inbetween waterings. I never watered every day, especially after repotting into larger pots. It sounds like you are okay, and I'm sure you will see them deepen in color when you start hardening off - that is such a cool thing to see happen. Good luck!
