I planted 6 tomatoes last week, all from the same reputable nursery, 4 Celebrities, 1 Sweet Million, and 1 Big Boy beefsteak. They are in a bed that did not have tomatoes last summer. The beefsteak started browning and wilting on almost the whole plant almost immediately, and 1 of the Celebrities turned brown about halfway down the stem. I took out the beefsteak today, and cut the Celebrity to the point where healthy tissue appears.

What is going on? Did these 2 plants arrive with some disease? The other 4 tomatoes have doubled in size and are doing beautifully. And I bought another plant to replace the one I took out. If I plant it in the same hole will it die too?

This has never happened before! Very strange...what do you think is the cause and what should I do?

Tomatoes are losing the battle here, every single seedling got some kind of mold. Last year I had to pull up most of my tomatoes (heirlooms and hybrids) except for 2 Parks Whoppers, Sweet Million and Juliet. Tomato spotted wilt virus was the culprit. Here's a good website for ID'ing problems but no organic remedies. http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/tomatoproblemsolver/index.html
I'm trying a vigorous aerated compost tea spray program this year. I suspect as fast as yours declined it was something from the nursery.

Bummer, Jennifer! Sorry to hear about that. Sounds like their soil problem, not yours. Did you examine the roots and their soil before you tossed it?

Nice link, Dirt Pit!

The link was excellent but I don't think it was anything there. The roots seemed to be ok. A mystery. I bought a "Health Kick" plant and will put it in tomorrow. Hope it doesn't catch whatever this problem was.
