What an absolutely prize-winning head of Black-Seeded Simpson!!!!

I never seem to be able to wait for most lettuces to head up - always end up picking them leaf-by-leaf or when very young as cut-&-come-again.

Part of it comes from our very unpredictable weather - it can jump from 50 to 90 overnight.

I don't get the heads, either. I sow really thickly and pull tender lettuce to eat as thinners. Even do that with Cos type, though occassionally get a head there. It's just so darn dry here all summer, I tend to grow lettuce as a living mulch for itself.

lisaann, The bees are doing good. They are built up and I have added honey supers, so we will just wait to see if they will fill them. The next 30 days are important days for the bees here. If we get a good honey flow they will fill their boxes. By August 15 it is about over and I usually extract about then.

that lettuce is PRIZE WINNING!!!! Here I live where I am *supposed* to be able to grow lettuce that size. But mine are never close to that size.

Blow up the picture and hang it on your wall!!
