What is more important? If it's getting ride of the pest. put a thick layer of newspaper as mulch over the whole thing. Then put something on it to hold it down. You could use the dreaded black plastic over the bed, but that isn't as good as newspaper, it'll kill off your microherd. Then there's also my favorite... vinegar as a herbacide. :x :x :x
