After several years of living with a tiny garden and managing my own composting etc, my husband & I are moving to a new city (Buffalo, NY) into an apartment. My next few years of organic gardening will now be in containers. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good way to compost ordinary kitchen scraps etc in a small container - I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is possible to compost in plastic bags, but I've no idea how to start! Thanks a bunch! Ainsley
Any organic scraps will compost, big piles will have the chance to heat up as long as the combination of ingredients, moisture and air are present. Small containers do not have the mass needed to heat up, but the same process will occur, just much slower. Use the proper mix of greens and browns and have patience, or even better look into worm bins.. Once you try one you will be hooked! My favorite container mix is simple leaf mould, shred and bag leaves, poke a few holes for air, add a few handfuls of good forest soil if available, make sure they are kept moist, and wait for a few years until ready, but the wait is worth it.
