I keep meaning to ask if anyone has seen anything like this... Hanging from my Bald Cypress are about a 1/2 doz. small (about 3")sack things that are shaped like skinny footballs, are the kind of material that spiders make sacks of, but covered, perfectly evenly with little twigs. It's like the twigs are laid out next to each other to cover the entire thing. The are all hollow feeling and pliable, but I haven't the guts to cut one open. (just in case I don't want to see what's in them.) They have just appeared this winter, and I haven't seen any wierd insects around, but I have NO CLUE what they are. never seen anything like it! Any thoughts? ?:|
They are a form of catipiller. In large swarms they can decimate a tree, but it sounds like they've already created their crysiallises and won't be bothering you anymore. If you look on the bottom of the pod, you can tell if the insect is still there, the pod will have an obvious opening if they've hatched.
