Okay, Everything I read says prune your roses in April just before new growth appears. But in one of OG's past magazines it talked about mulching over the stock for the winter. So, my question, Living in Montana, do I prune back now (nov) to 6" or so and mulch or, or wait till spring.

When to prune a rose depends on where you live and the typical winter weather you have. Those that live where winters can be brutal (cause serious winter kill of exposed canes) can prune them back and cover them with some kind of protection that is then removed before new growth (often earlier than April) starts in the spring.

The sign of a good gardener is not a green thumb, it is brown knees.

I agree 100% with Kimm1. When I lived in WA, I sometimes had blooms on my roses as late as December. I pruned those back in the spring. I now live in MN and I prune in the fall, then i make a wire cage abound 18" in diameter and 8-10" higher then the canes out of hardware cloth, place it around the pruned bushes and STUFF the cages with leaves to help protect the canes from the extreme cold. Then, when April comes, I pull the cage off and put the leaves in my compost bin.

In Montana, I'd expect that you need a coat of insulation over everything!! Wink Even here in Tennessee we sometimes winterkill of roses if we don't mulch several inches up the stem.
